The summer holidays are winding down, and for a lot of families that means later bedtimes, looser routines, and a bit of nerves creeping in about the return to school. The good news is that getting ready doesn’t have to be stressful. A few small, playful steps in the last week or two of the holidays can make a big difference to how your child feels on day one and how smoothly your mornings run once term starts.
Here are our back to school tips for easing children back into term time, built around the things we care about most at JCB Explore: learning, confidence, and picking up real-world skills through play.

Don’t wait until the night before. Begin shifting bedtimes and wake-up times about a week before school starts, moving them by 15-20 minutes a day rather than all at once. It’s far easier on everyone than a sudden switch from 10pm holiday bedtimes to a 7am school alarm.
It also helps to rehearse the morning itself. Walk or drive the school route together, talk through what the school day will look like, and if your child is moving to a new school or class, see if you can visit beforehand so the building feels familiar rather than daunting.

Children process new situations through play, and going back to school is no exception. Setting up a pretend “school” at home, lining up teddies, taking a register and practising sitting still for story time gives kids a low-pressure way to rehearse what’s coming.
Getting dressed for the part helps too. Our Ethan Jacket is built for exactly this kind of real-world readiness: hardwearing enough for the playground, smart enough for the school run, and a genuinely practical layer for the unpredictable weather that always seems to arrive with September. Pair it with our Kids Icon Reversible Bucket Hat for break times outdoors, reversible, so it’s really two hats in one, and one less thing to lose track of in a busy school bag.

Term time asks a lot of young children: packing their own bag, keeping track of belongings, remembering PE kit days. These are skills, and like any skill, they get easier with practice before the pressure is on.
A simple place to start is giving your child their own space to organise. Our Oil Drum Pen Pot is a fun way to get pencils, pens and rulers sorted ahead of the first day and having their own desk pot makes packing the pencil case feel like their job, not yours. Let them check items off themselves as they pack, so it becomes a habit rather than a last-minute scramble.

Some nerves before the term starts are completely normal, even for children who love school. Ask open questions rather than leading ones. “What are you thinking about school starting?” tends to get more honest answers than “Are you nervous?”
Listen more than you reassure. Children often just want to know their feelings are heard, not immediately fixed. If something specific is worrying them, a new teacher, a friendship, an unfamiliar classroom, talk through it together and, where you can, take a practical step to address it, like a quick email to the teacher or a playdate with a familiar face before term starts.

To take the mental load off, we’ve put together a free printable checklist covering everything your child needs before returning to school, uniform, PE kit, pencil case essentials, water bottle, lunch box and more.

Print it out, stick it on the fridge, and let your child tick things off as they’re packed. It’s a small thing, but handing them the checklist turns getting ready into something they’re doing with you, not something being done to them.
Going back to school is a big change dressed up as a small one. A steady routine, a bit of rehearsal through play, and a child who feels involved in getting themselves ready will get your family through the first week in far better shape than a rushed Sunday night scramble. Start early, keep it playful, and let the checklist do the remembering for you.
